PRO LINE CAP / TBCA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Matt Cain, Houston HS (Germantown)     RHP    

   Matt compiled a 13-3 record at Houston and became a first round pick of the San Fransisco Giants.. Cain was the 25th pick of the 1st round.  Matt played rookie ball ths summer in Phoenix, AZ.  Matt was also named the Gatorade TN HS Player of the Year.  Cain was a 3 year letterman at Houston.

 

 

TBCA MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS

CLASS A

Brett Hunt, University School of Jackson   Catcher    

   Brett helped lead his Bruin team to 2 State titles during his career.  Hunt hit .437 with 12 HR and 56 RBI.  Hunt caught all 46 games for the 40-6 USJ squad.  Named to the All-State Tournament team in 2002 and helped the team to a 133-32 record during his career. 

 

CLASS AA

Steve Sweat, Lexington HS     Shortstop, RHP           

   Steve hit .500 with 72 base hits, hit 15 round trippers and drove in 59 runs.  He also stole 36 bases. On the mound, Sweat was   9-2 with 2 saves and 97 K in 69.2 IP.  He had an ERA of 1.81.  Sweat led the Tigers to the AA State title and was the MVP.  Steve accepted a scholarship to Union University.

CLASS AAA

Matt Scott, Lavergne HS     RHP                                

   Matt Scott was a 3 time All District RHP Pitcher of the Year, 2002 All-Midstate MVP, Region 5 POY and AAA State Tourn- ament MVP.  Scott was 14-3, with a 1.33 ERA and 141 K  and 4 BB in 2002.  His career numbers are just as impressive - 33-10, 362 K and only 47 BB.  Matt accepted a scholarship to MTSU.

 

DIVISION II

Ryan Mullins, Father Ryan HS     LHP                      

  Ryan was injured most of the 2002 season, but returned to lead the Irish to the D2 State title.  Finished the season with a 4-1 record and 55 K.  Mullins sported a low 1.05 ERA as well.  A 13 K performance vs. Briarcrest in the Sectionals and threw and 8-0 shutout against Webb in the State Tournament.  Ryan accepted a scholarship to Vanderbilt University.

 

 

TBCA COACH OF THE YEAR

CLASS A

Jimmy Carey, University School of Jackson 

Coach Carey led the Bruins to their 3rd State title in 2003.  USJ has won 196 games in his 7 year tenure.  The Bruins finished with a 40-6 record.  This is the 3rd TBCA Class A Coach of the Year award that Coach Carey has won. 

 

CLASS AA

Jason Patterson, Lexington HS

First year coach, Jason Patterson, led Lexington to the AA title, the first State Championship of any kind for the school.  The Tigers were and outstanding offensive club, with power (55 HR) and speed (165 SB).  Patterson was also named West TN Coach of the Year for 2002.

CLASS AAA

Craig Reavis, Lavergne HS

Craig led Lavergne to the 2002 State title.  The Wolverines finished 3rd in 2001.  Craig played for Jerry Mathis at Tullahoma when the Wildcats won the 1990 State Championship.  Reavis has won 104 games in the past 3 seasons. 

 

DIVISION II

Bill Brunner, Father Ryan HS                                 

  Bill led the Irish to 26-8 record and the D2 State title.  Bill is in coaching because "when I played for Jackie  Reavis I truly learned the fundamentals of baseball and decided I wanted to become a coach." 

 

JUNIOR COLLEGE

Ken Campbell, Walters State CC   

Ken led WSCC to a 51-6 record and a #2 National Ranking. 

COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY

Andy Rushing, Union University

Andy led the Bulldogs to a 44-20 record and won the regular season and tournament title in the TranSouth Conference. 

TBCA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE'S

Wayne Norfleet, Tennessee Weslyan and Cleveland State CC

Won over 70% of his gamesat CSCC, 1980 & 81 TWC teams finished top 20 in NAIA rankings, returned to TWC in 1993 and had 2 more top 20 squads.  Finalist for National NAIA Coach of the Year. 

Jackie Reavis, Franklin County HS and Motlow State CC

Jackie Reavis began his coaching career at Franklin Co. HS where he won 2 District titles, a Region title, and 1 TSSAA State Championship in the 4 yrs he was there.  He then went to Marshall County and won 2 District titles.  In 1973, Coach Reavis went to Motlow St.CC where he won 260 games.  He served as pitching coach for the Don Rhoton's 2000 Motlow squad which finished 2nd at the NJCAA World Series.  Coach Reavis is active today as pitching coach at Tullahoma HS.  "My objective in coaching is to share Christ and win games," said Reavis.

Dave Rutherford, Sullivan East HS  and Sullivan North HS

Coach Rutherford is one of the founding members of the TBCA.  He coached at Sullivan North and East and amassed 232 wins in 15 years of coaching.  He had 6 players sign pro contracts and 52 play college baseball.
