SOUTHERN ATHLETIC FIELDS / TBCA   FIELD OF THE YEAR

William Blount HS       Charlie Puleo          FIELD RENOVATION PICTURES

This renovation was a huge project fort the school and included the efforts of many people. The results of countless hours of planning, fundraising and the leadership of Coach Puleo. Congratulations to everyone involved in the project.

 

 

PRO LINE CAP / TBCA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Kyle Waldrop, Farragut HS      RHP               

Kyle was named 1st team All-American and taken by the Minnesota Twins in the first round of the MLB draft. At Farragut, Waldrop went 14-0 with an ERA of 0.15. He struck out 118 batters and allowed only 8 walks in 91 innings pitched. He hit .493 with 16 HR and 67 rbi and added a state leading 26 doubles while leading his team to a second consecutive AAA title.

 

TBCA MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS

CLASS A

Michael McGee, Goodpasture Christian School, LHP    

Michael led the Cougars to the Class A state title in '04 while going 13-1. His 1.25 ERA and eight complete games solidified a good pitching staff. McGee struck out 103 batters and shutout two opponents. His career numbers speak for themselves - 25-4, 1.96 ERA and 193 strikeouts in 214 IP. McGee signed a scholarship with Trevecca University.

 

CLASS AA

Phillip White, Milan HS, SS/RHP          

Phillip led the Milan Bulldogs to the AA state title while going 7-0 on the mound and hitting .433 with 11 HR and 44 rbi. White was named 11AA MVP and had a slugging pct. of .713.

 

 

CLASS AAA

Kyle Waldrop, Farragut HS  RHP

DIVISION II

Michael Fisher, Montgomery Bell Academy,                      

Michael led the Big Red to the D2 title in '04 and joins last year's winner, Wes Hodges at Georgia Tech. Fisher hit .474 with 4 HR and 29 rbi with a .753 slugging pct.

 

TJCCAA

Boodle Clark, Walters State CC, 3b/RHP

Boodle was named an NJCAA 2nd team All-American. Clark was signed by the Cleveland Indians and played for the Burlington Indians of the Appalachian League. Clark batted .400 with 11 HR and 65 rbi last season. Clark was also named to several post season awards.

 

 

TBCA COACH OF THE YEAR

CLASS A

Richie Estep, Goodpasture Christian School

Coach Estep led the Cougars to the state title in 2004. He has coached at Goodpasture for 6 seasons, 2 as an assistant and 4 as the head coach. Estep has a career record of 128-39.

 

CLASS AA

Donnie Joyner, Milan HS

Coach Joyner led the Bulldogs to the AA state title in 2004. Joyner has won 9 district, 4 region and 3 sectional titles and has a career record of 397-154.

 

CLASS AAA

Tommy Pharr, Farragut HS

Coach Pharr wins this award for the second consecutive year after the Admirals won another AAA state title. Compiling a 261-49 record at Farragut, Pharr has coached at Monterey HS and at Baylor University.

 

DIVISION II

Thomas Wims, Montgomery Bell Academy                               

2004 was a great year on West End and MBA came out of nowhere to capture the Division II state title.

 

 

JUNIOR COLLEGE

Johnny Ray, Southwest TN CC   

Ray led the Saluquis to the TJCCAA State and Region VII titles in his first year as a head coach at Southwest.

 

 

COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY

Woody Hunt, Cumberland University

Coach Hunt and crew won the NAIA National Championship last year, going 59-21. Hunt's career record is 992 - 329. After 7 World Series appearances the Bulldogs finally found the pot of gold with their first NAIA title.

 

TBCA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE'S

Todd Helton, Knox Central HS/University of Tennessee/Colorado Rockies

Todd Helton was named the first ever TBCA AAA Player of the Year in 1992. Todd hit .412 as a freshman, .500 as a sophomore, .495 as a junior and .656 his senior year. Named to several HS All American teams and he was all state in 1991 and 1992. At the University of Tennessee, Helton led the Vols to back to back appearances in the College World Series as well as being named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American team. Todd's career numbers at UT were astounding. He hit .387 with 288 hits and 38 HR. He was also 19-5 with a 2.43 ERA. Professionally, Helton has 3 gold gloves to his credit while hitting .339 and has 250 HR. Helton credits his high school coach, Bud Bales, with teaching him how to play the game "like a professional".

 

 

Gene Lively, Chattanooga Central HS

Gene Lively has coached at Jefferson County, Unicoi County, Ooltewah, and finished his distinguished career at Chattanooga Central. Gene's career coaching record is 672-261. Lively played college baseball at Carson Newman and was part of the 1965 National Championship team. He is part of the school's "All Century" team where he posted a batting average of .476 in 1965. 14 district titles, 6 region titles, and 2 state titles.

 

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

 Jim Herbert, Shelby Conty Umpire Association

Jim Herbert has been involved in baseball since he was a youngster. He graduated from Treadwell and was named to the All-Memphis team as a catcher. After completing his playing career Herbert stayed involved through umpiring. He has umpired for 45 years and has been at just about every level you can think of - SEC, Local college, High School, Legion, etc. Mr. Herbert has been a great part of the Tennessee baseball tradition.

 

 

WARNER FIELD CONSTRUCTION/TBCA HARDSHIP FIELD OF THE YEAR

This is the first year for this award and is given by Warner Field Construction. Qualification- if your field has undergone a weather disaster or has been rundown for several years and needs some work. Contact Pat Swallows to get your name in the hat.

Trousdale County HS, Davy Cothron - Head Coach

Davy Cothron and Trousdale County will get a Infield Renovation and 1 ton of infield mix.
