Nathan Matthews returns as a senior
second baseman. Nathan led the offense last year
with the highest batting average and on base percentage. His glove
handling is excellent with very few balls getting by him. Jonah Nickles
returns as a senior right fielder. Jonah's speed, range and long arms
prevent most balls from either getting by him or dropping in front. Otha
King returns as a senior first baseman. Otha's fearless defense stops
anything hit on the ground. His great glovemanship
also says many errant throws and turns them into outs. Luke Patton returns
as our center fielder. Luke's range and excellent glove saved a number of
potential game changing hits and turned them into quiet outs.
Other juniors that will contribute to a strong US defense will be catcher
Law Loving and out-fielder Luke Champoullian. The position vacated by a
graduating senior still up for grabs is short stop. There are several
players who will vie for this position when practice starts in February.
Defensively, University School will have the best right side in our
conference and
one of the best in the area.
Three junior pitchers will lead the staff from the mound. These are Taylor
Fleenor, Tyler Evanshen and Will Burton. Each made big strides in his
pitching during last season.
The first key to University School's success is to improve our offensive
punch. The team had little power last season. However, with our 7
returning starters a year older and stronger that may take care of itself.
The second key to a winning season for us is to improve our pitching
depth. Last season we had only one experienced starter, a senior. This
year's 3 juniors that will lead the pitching rotation developed well as
sophomores last season. If they continue to improve at the same or better
rate, then the team will be more competitive than last year. |

Top Returning Players
Blake Leach 2B 12
Bubba Bias LF 11
The Bobcats must replace 9 Seniors, 7
of whom saw significant time. The loss of All State performers Joshua &
Jeremiah Justice, as well as Tennessee Wesleyan signee, Brent Kelley,
could prove to be difficult. Seniors Blake
Leach and Justin Whalen, as well as Juniors Bubba Bias and Cody
Brown will be looked to for leadership. The Bobcat pitching must be
rebuilt with Blake Leach being the ace and only returning pitcher.
"For the Bobcats to be successful, the inex-perienced & young players must
mature very quickly, we have talent just very young," said 'Cat coach Tony
Kegley. Coalfield

Johnny Hill(.415 6hr 33 rbi) and Nick
Duncan (7-0 1.23 era) return as the teams only two Seniors. The catching
position is solid with Jr. Logan Alley (.431 3hr 28rbi) ,and trans-fer
Noah Melton behind the dish. The sopho-more class could be this teams
strong point, if they develop throughout the year. SS Taylor Newberry
(.404 1hr 17rbi) is very solid up the middle. CF/P Kyle Warwick(.396
28sb). Freshman phenom Brandon Evans will start at third and could be a
force on the mound by year's end. Pitching and defense will determine this
teams fate by tournament time.
Adam Doughty development on the mound might be just what this team needs
to get them
over the top. The team is led by first year coach, and former Jacket
All-American Jason Wilson. |
