Cascade's defense must step up and back its pitching staff in order to
improve on last year's 23-11 season. MIF'ers Levi Bain and MoMo Stewart
having been playing together for this their fourth year and must anchor
the "D" along with SR first baseman, Cascade's two time gold-en glove
award winner, Tyler Bowman. The only returning OF is JR LF Matt Bain who
started the 2006 season platooning, but later won the job
and let the team with a .441 average. Corey Mullins and Kyle Clanton will
be given first chance to earn the other two OF spots after punching the
time clock and working hard this summer. Three players will need to step
up to play the hot corner, be a fourth OF, and a utility IF. Behind the
plate will be SR Colt
Davis and JR Zach Hill with big shoes to fill. They both must handle the
pitching staff and be called upon to play other positions as well.
Offensively, the Champions as usual must do all the little things right to
score runs and put pressure on their opponent. Gone are four and five hole
hitters Nick Davis(Bryan College) and J.R. Thomes (Roane State) who drove
in many runners for the boys from Bell Buckle in crucial situations.
Stewart will be penciled in at lead off after having an All-State
sophomore year, he will be followed by Bain and Bowman,
with rest of the order and these three to be shaken up in order to find a
winning formula. A major key for Cascade will be to have consis-tent
threats 1-9 in the order.
Pitching could very well be the Champions strength led by SR LH Tyler
Bowman, SR RH
Levi Bain, JR RH MoMo Stewart, and JR RH Kyle Clanton, even after losing
SR RH and Lee Univ. signee, Jeffrey Comstock. All four will be asked to be
starters, set up men, and closers in different situations in disrtict
games. All are two way players. After these four, SR RH
basketball PG Stefin Reed will be asked to throw innings in non-district
and tournament games along with four very young lefthanders,
Josh Brown, SOPH, Chase Nunley, SOPH, Jay Bishop, FR, and Dylan Davis,
8th.
After setting a school record for wins the 2007 Champs must continue to
have good pitching, defense and timely hitting in order to avoid a let
down in 2007. Improving in all three areas would play great dividends for
Cascade. Forrest Class A Runner-up
34-5 1/20/07
Lost eight seniors last year, five of
which started for three years. The 2007 Rockets will feature several young
players, but will have a good mix of older players who have some playing
experience.
Potential Lineup
1B Blake Arceneaux (SR) or Andy Burkett (SR) 2B Seth Brothers (SO)
3B Will Gerweck (SR)
SS Colin Henson (SO)
OF Brian Whitley (SR)
OF Chase Beaulie (SR)
OF Jacob Davis (SO)
C Kris Albarran (JR)
UT Micah Phifer (JR)
Pitchers
Andy Burkett (2006 8-0, 6 saves, 1.61 ERA), Blake Arceneaux, Brian
Whitely, Jacob Davis, and Micah Phifer.
It will be tough for the 2007 Rockets
to match the offensive output of last year's team. The Rockets graduated
50 home runs, 200+ RBI, 22 wins, and valuable playing experience. This
year's lineup will feature less power, but it will be more balanced from
1-9. The projected lineup features athletic contact hitters who can run.
The pitching staff will be anchored by senior Andy Burkett. While serving
as the num-ber three starter on last year's team, Burkett finished with
some super numbers. The Rockets will need a big year from Burkett as well
as fellow seniors Brian Whitley, Blake Arceneaux, and junior Micah Phifer
if they look to achieve any success in the post season. "It will be tough
for us to finish at the top this year. Parker and Bassham are great
coaches and moti-vators and their teams should finish 1 and 2 in the
region. We only hope that we can be compet-itive," said Rocket coach Babe
Hardision. |

Seniors Stephen Lewis and Bruce
Jumper return for their final year hoping to propel the Bulldogs past the
first round of the region. Seniors Drew Nowlin and John Dickey will add
defensive and offensive punch to the senior laden line-up.
Seniors Brett Holt and John Dickey will anchor the starting rotation.
Sophomore Kerry Workman could be the number two in the rotation.
Defense could be the difference maker this year for the bulldogs. Starting
pitching and offense should be solid.

Jon Ivie (Belmont signee) will be the
only senior returning for the Eagles. He will
lead a very young team trying to replace five seniors. Chris Carrington
and Coty Brewer will be juniors in the line up as everyone else will be
sophomores and freshmen. Key players in the sophomore class will be Logan
Harville, Wes Long, Logan Hendrix, and Clint Gobbel.

players to be good leaders," said coach Greg Burleson.
Perry County 14-16

a very young team last year that start 3-4 freshman every game. Will get

the top pitcher in a deep rotation an over .400 hitter as a junior.

Strength will be a deep pitching staff that gained valuable experience
last season with three freshman seeing a lot of mound time. The lineup
will still need to produce runs consis-tently which was a major weakness
last season.
"This team has a lot of potential with all the returning players we have
back. We will still be very young with only three seniors this year so
experience could be a problem." says Coach Caleb Dunkle. |
