Dyer County will have some big holes to fill with the loss of six
positions guys and its top 3 arms in 06. Many young inexperienced
players will be called upon to step up and compete this season. The team
is filled with some very tal-ented freshman and sophomores that will com-pete
for varsity starting jobs. The pitching staff has a chance to be very deep
without the presence of one dominant arm- although they are very
consistent and compete well. Chad Gammons and B.A. Davis will share duties
behind the plate as both guys will get their share of mound work. If we
continue to grow as a team it could be possible to have a good season .
"Our guys have grown physically and mentally this off-season so only time
will tell how good or bad we will be," says Coach Preston Ozment.

Solid infield with a lot of game experience. With the graduation of Steven
Brown,'06, the only question mark going into the pre-season is at the
shortstop position where two promising athletes are vying for the spot.
Outfield is also very solid with veteran outfielders taking charge. Our
pitching staff is extremely deep
which will enable us to keep a lot of fresh arms throughout the long
season. Offensively, we bring back a group that put up some great numbers
last year. And again, our overall team speed will be exceptional this
year. Our main keys to success is to maintain our tradition-ally strong
work ethic, keeping everyone
healthy, and playing to win every day. |

USJ's keys for success are simple. One, stay healthy through out the year.
Two, come
together as a team at the end. USJ is very young this year. The older and
experienced players will need to be on the field for USJ to be able to be
successful and have any chance to reach that final game. With that
inexperience, the team will need to learn how to play toget-her. Players
will need to understand their role in the goals of the team. The younger
players will need to grow up fast and be responsible to carry some of the
load. USJ has the talent to go deep late in the season but there are some
concerns. USJ needs to replace some great seniors from last year
especially one pitching spot. Defensively USJ was strong last year due to
the seniors that were on the field. This years team will need to work hard
and believe. It could be ugly early but great in the end.

1/22/07 After winning the Class AA
State Championship in 2003 and finishing 3rd in the State in 2005 the
Tigers finished third in a very tough district to State Champion Covington
and State Runner-up USJ. The Tigers have several return-ing starters and
lost only one starting pitcher from last season. The squad is led by
several seniors including Khyyan Norfork, Wade Vander-griff, Tyler Rogers,
Miller Scoggins and Allen
Hargett. Norfork is a great athlete that plays shortstop and runs very
well and hit .388 last season. Vandergriff is a very strong player,
possesses a great arm, and was our leading power hitter in 2005. Rogers is
a very versatile player and will pitch and play centerfield. Scoggins has
worked very hard in the weight room and will be a key ingredient in 2006
after batting .310 last season. Hargett had a great junior year as our #1
pitcher. The lefthander had a 2.31 era and pitched against
our toughest opponents. Lost to USJ 1-0 in regular season and then
lost to Covington 1-0 despite shutting them out for eight innings. He
should be one of the keys to our 2007 season. Also returning from last
season are juniors Zach Lewis(p/3b) and Thomas Pillow. Both have great
attitudes and are extremely hard workers.
Jeffery Edwards and Ryan Seaton are both sophomores that will be
important ingredients. Seaton caught most of the season as a
freshman and Edwards pitched in several varsity games.
Our pitching staff should be the strength of our team. We have six
returning pitchers and some talented youngsters that could contribute:
Allen Hargett(LH) Senior 5-4 2.37 era
Tyler Rogers(LH) Senior 6-0 2.53 era
Jeffery Edwards(LH) Sophomore 1-1 3.97 era
Miller Scoggins (RH) Senior 1-1 2.63 era
Zach Lewis (RH) Junior 3-3 2.94 era
Wade Vandergriff(RH) Senior- will be our closer
Our pitching staff should be a strong point for the Tigers, but also our
defense and team speed should be an asset. We must get better offen-sively,
score more runs and be more consistent. Covington

“This year our team must overcome the gradua-tion of 9 starters off the 06
team. We do return some experience, but the roles of that experience will
be a lot more. I feel that our work ethic is their, we must continue to
prog-ress and overcome youthful mistakes. I feel that we do have a
pitching staff that will throw strikes and give us a chance to stay in
ball games. Our young pitchers must overcome that big game atmosphere to
be successful,” said Coach Geno Miller. |
