USN's top returning Position Player is SS Ricky Coleman(10), who led the team in almost every offensive category. Michael Osheroff 1b(10) and Quentin Ross 2b(10) are expected to provide the rest of the offensive punch.

LHP's BJ Jones(12) and Paul DiSilvestro(12) ERA's 1.3 and .8 will shoulder to load of inn-ings with LHP Michael Osheroff(10) and Ricky Coleman(10) rounding out the rotation.

"While expecting to get quality starts with our pitching quality, our younger players must step up and score runs," said Coach Kevin Baynham.

2007 Team Preview:

Infield -  Returning starters include Alex Boyd (1B), DJ Luna (2B), Johnson Coley (SS), and Jordan Jones (3B). However, there is  a lot of flexibility and versatility within the infield positions. Trent Caffee will also vie for a starting job at either 1B or 3B. Dylan Stinson and Ben LePere are also solid first baseman.
Luna and Jones are interchangable parts at 2B or 3B.  Other infielders searching for playing time are Jeff Davis (3B), Daniel Cage (2B), and Sam Dove (2B/SS). Andy Lennington and Jay Luna are incoming freshman infielders.

Catching- Both returning catchers provide a strong presence. Jacob Stallings and Thomas Lundborg shared duties behind the dish last season. Although Stallings garnered most of the starting assignments, both catcher throw well, block well, and are exceptional in calling games. Lundborg's presence allows Stallings to possibly toe the rubber on a more consistent basis. Jay Clark is also a team favorite.

Outfield-  The outfielders will probably shake out during the  pre-conference schedule. Mason Graham is a free swinger who returns as the starting rightfielder. Mark Jacobs  and Jackson Boyd shared every start in centerfield last season. Jeremy McBee and Chris Besch are poised to earn playing time in either left or center
field. If the infield gets too crowded, Alex Boyd is an excellent outfielder who could make the switch to the outfield. Drew Floyd, Philip Henninger, and Sterett Seckman are three sopho-mores on the horizon. Matthew LePere and Cody Nelson are incoming freshman outfielders.

Pitching- Although a true stopper may not high-light the rotation, there is more depth than ever in the 2007 pitching staff. Drew Bledsoe, Alex Boyd, Ben LePere, Drew Floyd, and Will Blalock are all capable of making quality starts at the varsity level. Floyd's rubber arm and mentality could also make him effective as a middle reliever. DJ Luna, Jacob Stallings, and Jeremy McBee can also provide innings as a
middle reliever. Moving from starter to the closer role, Trent Caffee should be very effective. Zach Ellis and Andrew Hinson are pitchers on the horizon.

Hopefully we have a shot to compete for another Region Title. If we stay injury free, keep working hard and getting better each day we may be okay. We are a long way away from that at the present time. We do return a decent amount of our starters but they along with the new-comers will have to step it up a notch for us to have a chance to compete.

Top Returning Players

Vinny Casha, Sr, C, .357
Drew Burns, Sr, OF, .395, 5 HR, 26 RBI
Franklin Pogue, Sr, 2B, .317, 16 RBI
Cole Gobbell, Jr, SS,.360, 29 RBI

After graduating ten seniors, Father Ryan will have some new faces in the line-up. Casha, Gobbell and Pogue provide a strong defensive middle while Burns provides some legitimate power to the middle of the order. Juniors Justin Guidry (OF/1B) and Drew Brown(3B) should have an immediate impact as well.

Top returning pitchers
Andrew Rowan, Sr., 2-3, 39 IP, 4.13 ERA
Justin Guidry, Jr., 5-4, 34 IP, 3.53 ERA
Drew Brown, Jr., 0-1, 13 IP, 3.23 ERA

Pitching could be the Irish's biggest question mark.  Rowan, Guidry and Brown all have exper-ience but none has had to shoulder as big a load as this will this year. Depth on the mound is also a concern.  Eric Dennison (Sr.), Matt Robuck (Sr.), Joe Seul(Jr.) and Sean Howell (Jr.) will be counted on to provide quality innings if the Irish expect to successfully get through the region schedule.

Keys to success will be pitching, especially pitching depth.  The chief defensive concern is replacing the entire OF from last year.  Senior leadership will be critical for the Irish to make a run at the region title.
