SOUTHERN ATHLETIC FIELDS / TBCA FIELD OF THE YEAR Briarcrest Christian School Alan Pavatte of Briarcrest accepts the TBCA 2006 Field of the Year award.
PRO LINE CAP / TBCA PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Bryan Morris went 11-1 with 151K and had an 0.58 ERA in 78.1 innings. Morris was drafted in the 3rd round, 68th pick overall by Tampa Bay. Morris declined the offer and signed with Motlow State CC. He also hit .491 with 9 HR and 48 rbi.
CLASS A Josh Liles is the youngest player to ever win this award. As a sophomore, Liles hit .483, drove in 43 runs and scored 56 times. He led the Bruins to their fourth championship. At this time, Liles is rated #72 in the class of '07 by Baseball America.
CLASS AA
Adam Bland hit .416 with 20 doubles and drove in 43 runs in 2005. Adam hit .583 in the state tournament to lead the Mustangs to the AA title. Bland signed with Trevecca Nazarene University. Bland was all-district, all-region, all mid-state and was also named to the TSWA All State team. His 20 doubles ranks him 2nd in the state last season.
CLASS AAA
DIVISION II
Logan Forsythe hit .500 (62 hits) for the state champion Purple Wave of CBHS. He also led the state with 13 triples, scored 53 runs and drove in 50 more. Logan is also the current state leader for career triples with 21.
Bobby Bratton was a NJCAA 3rd Team All-American after hitting .383 with 20 HR and 59 rbi. Bratton was named TJCCAA MVP and the Tennessee Baseball Report-TJCCAA Most Valuable Hitter. In addition, Bratton had 75 hits and scored 73 runs.
Kevin Hammons threw 7 complete games with a 2.20 ERA while striking out 87 batters and allowing opponents to hit a lowly .173. Drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Kevin signed with Tusculum College. Hammons was also named the Tennessee Baseball Report-TJCCAA Most Valuable Pitcher.
Brad Coon was a big reason why his Trojans won the TranSouth Championship. Brad hit .377 and stole 51 bases for Coach Jeff Forehand's diamond 9. In addition set 6 school records in '05. Coon led all small colleges in triples with 8 and stolen bases.
Matt Norfleet finished his college career in fine fashion. 9-0 with a 1.43 ERA and a 4-year NAIA All American, Matt was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 22nd round. Norfleet turned in a fine summer of professional ball as well, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.29 ERA. CLASS A Coach Dyer led the Bruins to their fourth state title, his first as head coach. Dyer has led his Bruins to a 77-14 record in his 2 year tenure as head coach, including two trips to the state tournament.
CLASS AA
Coach Smith has led the Mustangs for 28 years. Smith led the '05 Mustangs to their 6th state title and has a career record of 640-161. The Mustangs have won 20 district titles and 15 region titles in that time period.
CLASS AAA Coach McCarter led the Mustangs to a 36-8 record and the AAA state title in '05. In Coach McCarter's first six seasons, he has led Houston to two state tourney appearances and had over 30 players sign college scholarships.
DIVISION II Buster Kelso, Christian Brothers HS Coach Kelso led the Purple Wave to their state leading 9th title in 2005. Under Coach Kelso's direction, CBHS has won five of those nine titles in three different divisions. His career record is 628-191.
JUNIOR COLLEGE Ken Campbell, Walters State CC Coach Campbell led the Senators to the NJCAA World Series in '05 for the second time in his six year tenure at the school. Campbell has compiled a 273-71 record during that time while winning 3 State/Region VII titles.
NCAA DIVISION I COACH OF THE YEAR Rod Delmonico, University of Tennessee Coach Delmonico led the Volunteers to the College World Series for the 3rd time in his tenure. Delmonico has won 634 games in 17 years with the Vols and has a winning percentage of .634. COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY Coach Altopp has been involved in coaching college baseball for 34 years. Altopp re-opened baseball at Lee and has made it to the pinnacle by reaching the NAIA World Series in 2005. Lee finished 49-12 as Altopp was named the SSAC Coach of the Year. He has 765 wins to his credit and is a former president of the ABCA.
Coach Hunt and crew returned to the NAIA World Series again in '05 . Hunt's 24 year career record is 1043-431. He is one of only six NAIA Head Coaches to ever win at least 1000 games. A member of the TBCA Hall of Fame, Hunt is an ambassador of baseball.
Coach George has been coaching baseball at Marshall County HS for 32 years. In this time, he has amassed a 707-225 record with 21 district titles, 20 region titles, 19 state quarterfinal appearances, 2 sectionals, 11 state tourney appearances and 3 state titles. In addition, the Tigers have finished 3rd three times, and have been runner-up four times. Over 100 players have gone on to play college ball, while 6 have been drafted.
Gene Etter just finished his 31st season at the helm of Baylor School. Etter has a career record of 626-281 and has led his teams to 18 district titles, 16 regional titles, and eleven times he has made the final four with one state runner-up and one state championship.
Mr. Bill Marbet started a part-time athletic field business in 1989 and 1995 went full time. Bill developed his own private label "mule mix" and the rest is history. SAF products are now used by little leagues to the big leagues. He supevises the TSSAA Spring Fling, The TJCCAA/Region VII tourney, and various other college regional events. In 2004 Bill was a member of the MLB All-Star Game grounds crew and in 2005 he was a member of the MLB World Series grounds crew. Bill is an active member in the TBCA, sponsors the awards and has been a valuable resource to coaches, schools and everyone involved with baseball in Tennessee.
