Greg Dennis - "
Cleveland State is a quality opponent
to open up the conference season with. Coach Poli-castro and his staff
do a super job in recruiting and coaching these guys and they present a
number of different problems to their opponents. We saw them quite a bit
this fall and know how potent both their pitching and hitting are. We
must play 23 innings of solid fundamental baseball and compete in all
the different areas of the game. Being early in the year, it is always
scary waiting to see who shows up for us and how they will respond to
the challenges a club like Cleveland State will throw at us. Hopefully,
our guys will show the tools and training we possess and execute them on
the field." |
Mike Policastro - "Coach
Dennis, of the (Chatt. St)Tigers, will have those guys ready to play.
The first weekend of conference games can usually carry a little more
emotion and Chattanooga St. will be ready to go.
Our team must continue to pitch
well. If we can keep away from giving up free bases and continue to
pound the strike zone we should be successful. Our hitters are getting
the first game jitters off and are starting to come around. We need get
better defensively each and every day." |

Tigers still did a great job of not allowing Cleveland State to have the
BIG inning. Many players had multiple hit days for the Tigers and Mickey
Campeanu came in relief throwing 4 quality innings and allowing the
Tigers to build their lead. |
Series Highlights - Series
Highlights - Overall, it was a nice job by Chatt State to play their
type of baseball and hold the Cougars to NO MULTIPLE RUN innings. To
have done this to a team of their offensive caliber is truly remarkable.
We
played solid defense and were efficient and timely with our hitting and
really showed great perseverance in all areas of the game.

Highlights -
Dane Archer gave Vol State a chance on the mound, and pitched well. Vol
State's defense struggled behind him and put Archer in many tough
situations in which Hiwassee was able to capitalize. The Tigers got a
solid performance from Ruggles who got some big outs when he needed to.

Marty Parks 1-2 1 0 1 0 0 0 0
Highlights - Vol State did what they needed to do in this game to win.
Every time Hiwassee put a run on the board, Vol State answered back. The
big story of Game 2 was Dustin Crabtree who started on the mound for Vol
State. He started out strong and as the game went on he got stronger. He
was throwing all of his pitches for strikes and keeping Hiwassee
off-balance.
Series Highlights - Both teams
pitching staffs did what they needed to do to give their teams a chance
to win. Errors were the demise to each team in thier loss. In the first
game, errors kept giving Hiwassee opportunities at the plate and they
capitalized. In the second game, not being able to handle bunt
situations cost Hiwassee. Offensively, Matt Robison and Blake Bratcher
led the Pioneers with 7 hits between them. For Hiwassee, Leony Henriquez
and Gary Tucker came up big. Hats off to Dustin Crabtree (Vol State) and
Ray Ruggles (Hiwassee) who both picked up a win and really competed on
the mound.
