Johnny Ray - " Volunteer State will be a very tough task for us. They have several dominant arms and quality hitters who will pose a problem for us. We must swing the bats and take advantage of every offensive oppor-tunity we get. I feel timely hitting could decide each game in this match up. Our pitchers must continue to make quality pitches and our infielders have to make the routine plays and not give away any free outs. A team like Vol will capitalize on the tiniest of mistakes. Our kids are playing hard and we look forward to the challenge of taking on Volunteer State this weekend." Mike Crossland - "There is no doubt that Johnny will have his team ready to go. Johnny has done a great job at Southwest since he has been there. They are coming off of a split with Walters State and probably feeling pretty good about their chances. We will have to play very well to have a chance. Our team has alot to growing up to do. We have killed ourselves all year with errors and not hitting the baseball with any consistency what so ever. If we are going to have any chance in this series or any other series in this conference we simply have to quit beating ourselves. We must have someone stand up and lead this team whether it be a Sophomore or a Freshman. Hopefully coming home will be what this team needs."

 Series Highlights -

The Pioneer bats came to life this weekend as they banged out 28 hits for the weekend. Dustin Crabtree started the series off with a dominate 2 hitter, striking out 10 hitters. Game two was jump started by Blake Bratchers 3-run home run in the top of the first inning. Archer threw the ball well while he recorded his first victory of the season. Game 3 saw more of a pitchers con-test as Southwest's Ivan Nails kept the Vol State hitters in check striking out six in five innings. Vol State used four pitchers to hold Southwest and complete the series sweep.

We were able to beat Motlow on a walk-off solo home run by Nick Belcher in the bottom of the 11th inning. We had to overcome a 4 to 6 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Bobby Bratton had a grand slam in the third inning to give them the lead.

Highlights:

Series Highlights - Hiwassee played a very tough weekend.  They made all the plays
and pitches when they needed to in the first two games to pick up two wins.  Raymond
Ruggles was outstanding working into the 9th inning of game 1.  The Tigers were able
to rally late in game two with a two out two run home run in the 7th by Chase Ponder
to take game two.  The Cougars offense finally clicked in game three and were able
to take advantage of some walks late in the game to win game three.  Closely fought
series all weekend long.
