Mike Crossland - "Steve
has his team playing very well and they have beaten some really talented
teams. They will be ready to play. They bring one of the top offenses
teams in the Conference to Gallatin this week-end, we will have to try to
keep them in check to have a chance. OUR TEAM MUST - Take advantage of the opportunities that we get. We cannot give Jackson extra outs and we cannot give up the big innings. We know that we will have our hands full this weekend." |
Steve Cornelison - "Vol has an outstanding group of talented players. They have arms that are capable of dominating a game and have some very dangerous guys offensively. They will be well coached and prepared. Combine that with playing on the road and the intensity and emotion that goes into a weekend series and I think we have our work cut out for us. OUR TEAM MUST - We must continue to stay focused on playing fundamentally sound baseball and continue to swing the bats. Our starting pitching has given us a chance to compete and we must continue to do that. We also need have some guys heal quickly. We currently have 3 starters out with injuries and listed as doubtful for the weekend." | ||||||

Walters State CC For Release: IMMEDIATELY Nick Belcher homered from his lead-off spot in the bottom of the first inning. He wasn’t done; he homered again in the second inning with the bases loaded. He finished the game 2-4, five RBIs, two runs scores and a base on balls. The Senators took game one of the three game series against the Roane State Raiders 19-8 in seven innings. The Senators improved to 28-6 (14-3) Walters State hit a total of five home runs in the contest. Stephan Shults launched his 12th of the season. Michael Wheeler’s three-run shot in the fifth inning was his 10th. RJ Schenk hit his sixth, and Belcher’s two homers were his eighth and ninth. Adam Ray got the win for the Senators. Colby Killian got the start and went three innings. He was relieved in the fourth inning when he loaded the bases without recording an out. The Raiders took the lead in the fourth by putting five runs on the board. Killian gave up seven runs on six hits in three innings of work. Ray worked four innings. He gave up one run on three hits. The Senators gained the lead back in the bottom of fourth, but a seven run fifth inning sealed the deal for the Senators. They tacked on three runs in the sixth for the early exit with the “mercy” rule. Shults finished 2-2 with four runs scored. Adam Stooksberry, Matt Ford and Wheeler had three RBIs each. “You’re always happy with wins like this,” said head coach Ken Campbell. “We struggled a little with pitching today, but the offense stepped up. Belcher hit the ball well with the grand slam in the second. I keep looking to see if the ball Shults hit has come down yet. We only made the one error, and that was a failed pick off. All-in-all it was good day.” Tyson Latham got the start for the Raiders. He also got the loss. He worked four and one-third innings. He gave up 15 runs on 12 hits with six walks. Eric Carlyle entered the fifth and worked an inning and two-thirds. He gave up four runs on three hits. Jason Walters was 2-3 with a run score and an RBI. Cameron Bowlin was 2-3 with a runs scored and three RBIs. The Senators and Raider will complete the three game series Saturday, April 7. They will play a doubleheader beginning at noon. Game 2
