Coaches comments: |
Coaches comments: |
Ken Campbell - "In
our eyes, Chattanooga State is the class of our league this year. Coach
Dennis has done a tremendous job building this program up to the level
they are. They are at or near the top of our league in hitting, pitching,
and fielding, and when you put those three things together you are not
going to lose many games. And any time you can have a ERA in the low
three's in college baseball, its special. We have to find a way to play
the "complete" game this weekend. When you play a team like Chattanooga,
who is out-standing in all phases of the game, you cannot have any
breakdowns if you want to stay in games. Our pitchers have to find a way
to control their offense, while at the same time our hitters must solve
the best
pitching staff in the league. It will definitely be an up-hill battle and
could be a long weekend for us if we don't come ready to compete."
|
Greg Dennis - "Walters
State is obviously the cream of the league. They have done everything that
the rest of us aspire to do and enjoyed the success that we all
crave. Coach Campbell and his staff have created a pro-gram that regularly
brings in the best players from around the nation and can beat you in many
ways. There is no better pitching coach than Joey Seavers nor recruiter
than Dave Shelton and it shows on the field each year. Coming off of a
national championship, they haven't missed a beat in compiling a superb
record and continuing their steady show of conference dominance. With
returning sophomores who are hungry for the trip back to Grand Junction,
they are a tough team to defend. We must get right into our offensive
mind-set and create scoring opportunities early. Our pitching has been our
strength and hitting is their strength, so it is going to be a battle of
who can impose their will on the other one.
This sets up to be a real struggle and hopefully with good defense and
situational offense, we can find a way to be successful." |

Win- Kelly (6-1). Loss- Gray (). Save- None.
HBP - by Kelly (Geren).
Two nationally ranked JUCO teams met Friday. The No. 7 Walters
State Senators hosted the No. 2 Chattanooga State Tigers at Senators
Field. The Senators upset the Tigers 9-3. Walters State improves to
35-7 (18-5). The Tigers jumped to an early 3-0 lead behind two Walters
State errors. The Senators answered with a run in the bottom of the
inning, and tied the game in the bottom of the second. Josh Daniels
launched his second homer of the season. Nick Belcher walked and swiped
second. RJ Schenk singled in Belcher to knot the game at three. Ryan
Kelley (6-1) settled in and pitched eight scoreless innings for his sixth
win of the season. In a complete game effort, he allowed three runs, none
earned, on six hits. He walked one batter and fanned five.
With a 6-3 lead in the sixth inning, Belcher led off with a double. Schenk
and Michael Wheeler left him still standing on second with
back-to-back pop-fly outs to the outfield. Chattanooga State elected
to intentionally walk Stephen Shults and take their chances with Adam
Milligan. Milligan in turn drove the ball to right-center field for his
11th homer of the season, a three run blast. He finished the game 2-5 with
three RBIs. Shults was 3-4 with an RBI and Adam Stooksberry was 3-4
with a pair of RBIs. Thomas Gray started the game for the Tigers. He went
five and two-thirds innings. He gave up nine runs on 14 hits. Lee Henry
was perfect for an inning and one-third with four strikeouts. Adam
Hinojosa
finished the game with one hit and one strike out in one inning of work.
Coty Green was 2-4 for the Tigers. He also had a pair of RBIs.
Heath Cheverton was 2-4. The Tigers and the Senators will finish the three
game series
Saturday, April 21 with a doubleheader begin-ning at noon. |
