Mike Bianco |
Mississippi |
![]() |
When Ole Miss named Mike Bianco as head coach of the Rebel baseball program on June 7, 2000, it was with an air of excitement as Ole Miss fans looked to see the Rebels return to prominence. In the seven seasons since taking the reins of the program, Bianco has delivered on that expectation as Ole Miss Baseball has become one of the nation’s benchmark programs. With six post-season appearances in seven years, including hosting four-straight Regionals and playing in three-straight Super Regionals in 2005, 2006 and 2007, Ole Miss has continued to rank among the nation’s elite each season under Bianco. The Rebels posted three-straight 40-win seasons from 2005-2007 for the first time in school history and have won at least 35 games each of the last seven seasons. In the Southeastern Conference, the nation’s toughest baseball league, Ole Miss leads all teams for conference wins over the past five seasons and is the only team to have posted a winning record in league play each year since 2003. Bianco has also led the Rebels to championships as Ole Miss won the Western Division Title in 2005 and followed that up a year later with the 2006 SEC Tournament Championship. On the field, Bianco has established a tradition of developing some of the nation’s top players as the Rebels have seen 15 All-America selections come through the program in the past seven seasons. The most recent additions to the list of All-Americans include a trio of Freshman All-America selections in 2007 as right-hander Nathan Baker, outfielder Jordan Henry and infielder Zach Miller. The excellence produced on the field has not gone unnoticed over the last six seasons under Bianco as 33 players have been drafted by Major League Baseball in that time. |

Mark Brew |
Lee University |
![]() |
Brew, who guided the Flames to a national runners-up spot in 2008, is 114-25 entering his third season. Last year, Lee made its third World Series appearance overall and earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Flames ended their year with a 63-10 record. Brew mentored two players to NAIA-All American status including First-Team pitcher Pablo Lopez and Second-Team first baseman Chris Warters.
The Flames rattled off 34 straight wins during the 2008 campaign starting with a 6-0 win on Feb. 8 and continue to win for nearly two-and-a-half more months. After appearing in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship, Lee took home Region XIII Championship honors wiping out LSU-Shreveport. Winners of the Super Regional, Lee again was on a hot streak heading into the World Series winning nine of its last 11 games.
Searching for its first ever national championship, Brew and the Flames won their first four World Series contests averaging 8 runs per game. However, their hot streak and season came to a halt when Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) won in consecutive nights to take home the national hardware. |

Daron Shoenrock |
Memphis |
![]() |
The 16th baseball coach in school history, Daron Schoenrock enters his fourth full season at the controls of Memphis baseball. After a rocky inaugural season, Schoenrock confirmed what many in the coaching world believed to be true when he was hired--that he was one of the top new head coaches in the business and that he could turn around a once successful Memphis baseball program. Schoenrock inherited a program that had lost its top three pitchers and 10 seniors from 2004, and struggled through a 13-42 campaign in 2005. He has wasted little time working to get the Tiger baseball program back on track, signing 25 newcomers for the 2006 season, including four four-year transfers, a National Junior College Player of the Year honoree and five major league draftees. Schoenrock brought those additions together and led the Tiger to a 32-win season in just his second campaign. The 32 wins were the most wins for Schoenrock in his three years as a head coach and the most by a Memphis baseball club since 2001. The 19-game turnaround tied for the second-best winning turnaround in the country in 2006 and also tied for the best turnaround in Tiger baseball history--tying that of the 2001 team. Along with that 32-28 mark came Memphis' first appearance in the Conference USA semifinals since the 2001 season. |

Derek Johnson |
Vanderbilt |
![]() |
Derek Johnson is now in his eighth season as an assistant coach for the Commodores and is widely considered one of the top pitching coaches in the country. Four of his last five staffs have led the Southeastern Conference in ERA while also being ranked nationally at No. 15 (2003), No. 7 (2004) and No. 17 (2005) and No. 13 (2007) respectively. Johnson's 2007 crew led the SEC in eight statistical categories including ERA (3.55), strikeouts (632), opponents batting average (.238), complete games (7) and runs allowed (266). Vanderbilt hurlers also threw a school record 606.2 innings in 67 games with 13 saves. Six pitchers were drafted and signed into the professional ranks led by No. 1 overall pick David Price (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) and the No. 8 overall pick Casey Weathers (Colorado Rockies). Price (the consensus National Player of the Year) shattered the school's single season and career strikeout records in just three years and Weathers, just two years removed from playing the outfield in junior college, developed into the top closer in the country in 2007 with 10 wins in relief. |

Steve Peterson |
MTSU |
|
|
There are many words to describe Steve Peterson's role as Middle Tennessee's highly successful baseball coach since 1988. Coach, fundraiser, teacher, recruiter, and architect are just a few, but if you are looking for one word describe the Blue Raiders' longtime skipper, try "winner." Peterson begins his 21st Blue Raider season as the school's all-time winningest coach, with 663 victories and a stockpile of conference championships and NCAA Tournament berths to his credit, demonstrating the consistency with which the driven skipper has guided the club. Peterson's drive for excellence has resulted in consistent success and has made Middle Tennessee a model program. The veteran coach has led Middle Tennessee to 10 regular-season conference championships, eight conference tournament titles, and eight NCAA Regional berths including two at-large selections in the past six years. Peterson guided the Blue Raiders to seven consecutive championships - either regular-season or tournament - during one stretch, proving Middle Tennessee doesn't rebuild, it reloads. Peterson's peers have recognized his achievements and contributions to the game by bestowing several honors on him. He was named the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association College Coach of the Year in 1992 and again in 2000. He was also inducted into the Rutherford County Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2007, Peterson was inducted into the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. |

Fred Corral |
Tennessee |
![]() |
“This is an exciting addition,” Raleigh said. “Fred Corral brings a wealth of experience at this level, and he’s one of the most respected pitching coaches in the country. His track record of developing pitchers is second to none. He knows the University of Tennessee, having coached here before, and he’ll add a lot to our staff.” During Corral’s first stint at Tennessee, he directed the Volunteers pitching staff to the upper echelons of the pitching-rich Southeastern Conference as well as the nation. His staffs posted consecutive sub-3.90 ERAs while combining for a 2.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Tennessee’s 3.16 walks allowed per nine innings in 2003 stands as the second-best mark in program history, and UT’s 2004 team ERA (3.51) ranked among the top 15 in the country. Six of the pitchers Corral mentored at Tennessee went on to be selected in the MLB draft. He signed James Adkins and coached Luke Hochevar, hurlers who now rank first and third on UT’s all-time strikeouts list, respectively, and are currently in the process of ascending toward the major leagues. |
