Outlook by position:
Infield - We like our infield as we have Roach and Zarzour back and
McDonald and Lance look very good defensively. McDonald is taking over
for last years Player of the Year Dylan Coleman and has the ability to be
even better than DC was, he is a very, very good player.
Catching- Both Reed and Sorrow caught all the games last year and will be
very solid back there.
Outfield- New guys all around returner Isaac Davenport. Tucker has looked
very good and Shipway and Alou can be nice additions.
Pitching- We picked up some very quality arms at break to go along with a
class returning and coming in that looks very good. We like our make-up
and feel these guys can be very good.
Schedule Highlights- We play Georgia Perimeter, East Georgia, West Georgia
and in a Myrtle Beach tournament against Pitt and Potomac State.

2011 W - 28 L- 24
Starters returning :6 Position players:3 Pitchers:3
Outlook by position:
Infield - Infield defense should be a big positive for us this year.
Returning shortstop Grant Zawadzki should have a big year after a solid
freshman year. Colin Sullivan will see most of the time at 1B and has
developed into a team leader. Newcomers DeAndre Allen and Randall Coley
will be at 2B and 3B respectively. Allen should be a mainstay at 2B with
great athleticism and good offense. Coley will see most of the time at 3B
but Colby Harmon and Cade Seeley will also see time.
Catching- Catching will be a big question mark for us entering the season.
All of our catchers are freshman and that in itself makes it very
difficult. Leadership will be a big key to the guy who steps up and wins
the position. Any possibility of these guys could be behind the plate,
Jared Davis, Damo DeMatteo, J.D. Cowart, Alex Huddleston, and Aaron
O'Dell.
Outfield- Cody Commons should be in center all year barring injuries.
Commons can really cover a lot of ground which for us is crucial with a
big centerfield area. Cody Hiefnar will open the season in right after
having a really good redshirt year. Left field will probably be a platoon
situation with Chase Edwards, Derek Shugart, and Michael Hargrove.
Pitching- Have some freshman from last year that had considerable time on
the mound and they will have to rely on those experiences to help guide
them as sophomores. Ross Spurgeon, Jared Burton, and Hunter Hammond all
started as freshman and should be near the front of the rotation this
season. Zack Taylor, Ethan Davis, Derek Chandler, and Tyler Sexton may
also see time in the starting roles. Tyler Kilgore, Thomas Huddleston,
Jeb Scoggins, and Justin Sturgeon will pitch out of the bullpen.
Schedule Highlights- Ga. Perimeter, Gordon College, West Ga. Tech, and as
always a very tough TCCAA schedule.
Key to success in '12 - Just like every year we have to be really good in
all three phases to have a chance in our league, our freshman have to step
up and play like sophomores and our sophomore must show better leadership
than we had last year. If we can find away to make less mistakes than our
opponent than we like our chances. |

Starters returning : 4 Position players: 2
Pitchers:2
Outlook by position:
Infield
– We
should have the ability to play quality infield defense this year. There
is no depth problem here. We have interchangeable parts that will allow
us to make adjustments when needed.
Catching
– We have four of five guys that have the ability to catch but Jordan
Parris is our leader back behind the dish. Athletic freshman Scott Gibson
will push for time with a few more utility guys cleaning up any inning
left ove
Outfield
–
Mississippi State commitment Derrick Armstrong will anchor a solid group.
Jon Reagan has made a smooth transition from 3B to RF which will allow him
to give us more innings on the mound. Several freshman will battle for
the third position along with the time that comes available when Jon is
pitching
Pitching
–The keystone of our staff, Logan Gray, will give us a
chance to win every time out. So many new faces on staff will make it my
job to put the young men in right roles to be successful.
Schedule Highlights
-
Gordon, Wallace, Calhoun and several quality teams from up north.
Key to success in
'12
- The right players must remain healthy…especially on the mound. The
responsibility of accelerating the learning curve of this young core will
fall on the coaching staff. Our sophomore heavy 2011 team proved to me
that I have to do a better job getting our CHARGERS “over the hump” as
freshmen.

Infield -We will have 4 freshman on the infield with sophomores Connor
Moore and Myles Holliman battling for the hot corner.
Catching- Chase Jones will more than
likely be the guy. Jordan Thiele and Clay Hughes are battling for time as
well.
Outfield- Once again, very young in
the outfield. Sophomore Seth Hinson will be in right.
Pitching- We feel like going into the season, this will be our strong
point. Robinson and Yanes were both conference starters for us in 2010.
Connor Moore and Matt Griggs were both weekend starters last year and
will battle for the Friday game. We feel like are depth will be our
strong point.
Schedule Highlights- Rend Lake, Three Rivers, Mineral Area, John A. Logan
during the week. Obviosly, every weekend is exciting
Key to success in '12 - We must pitch well and play solid defense. I
certainly feel like this group of guys has a chance to be very dangerous
in May. |

2011 W -28 L-24
Starters returning : 4 Position players: 3 Pitchers: 1
Outlook by position:
Infield - Should give us a good chance everyday. The middle of our
infield with Dalton Martinez and Juan Rivera has a chance to be as good as
anybody's. This should be our best defensive corner infield as we have had
the last few years with the additions of Matt Owens and Martin Key. We
lack some depth on the left side, but a couple guys can play multiple
positions if need be. Austin Hiatt and Miller Lane will compete for
playing time at 1st, and Colby Edds and Brandon Bonner will do the same at
2nd.
Catching- Probably our biggest question mark. If Kane Barrow can return
from an injury last season, he will make us solid back there. Jesse
Messick and Dave Kelso are continuing to get better, but struggled a bit
in the fall. As they have gotten used to our pitchers, they have shown
improvement and will both get time behind the plate.
Outfield- Belmont signee KJ Roberts will man CF for us and will hit
leadoff. Chris Jeffries and KJ can cover alot of ground in any park we
play. Richie Pearl has continued to be productive at the plate and will
share time with Taylor Douglas in RF. If healthy, we should be very solid
in the outfield.
Pitching- Have a good mixture of freshmen and sophomores. We will need
the freshmen to make an impact as a few will be fighting for a spot in the
conference rotation. We have a bunch of guys that will compete for
significant innings which should only make them better. Alex Shoulders is
the only returner that pitched significant innings last year and had a
good fall. Freshmen Jordan Nolen, Patrick McGrath, and Wes Parsons should
compete for a spot in rotation. Mike Purcell, Josh Cupples and Alex Martin
will fight for starts as well.
Schedule Highlights- NW FL, East Georgia, Wabash Valley, Itawamba and NW
Miss
Key to success in '12 - Need freshmen arms to make an impact on the mound
and we need to be productive at the plate as a team. We need have a good
start down in Florida to gain confidence for the rest of the year.

Starters returning : Position players: 4 Pitchers: 1
Outlook by position:
Infield - We will have a lot of guys in the mix early on in the infield
with several options available to us. We are fortunate to have several SS
type guys that can play multiple positions in the infield and outfield.
Catching- Catching should be one of our strong points with Taylor Follis
returning and the addition of Arkansas State transfer, Thomas Lundborg.
We have two quality defensive cathcers and have added a top bat at the
position as well. This position is really the key to developing a
pitching staff and I think we have 2 excellent catchers that do a great
job behind the plate.
Outfield- We will see a lot of different players at each position in the
outfield for us. We have some speed guys that we can move around into
different positions and have some of our better hitters in the outfield as
well. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out in the end.
Pitching- This will be the most talented staff we have had here in 5
years. We have 5 or 6 potential conference starters so our bullpen will
have much more depth. We also have some guys with some experience on the
mound and will look to them in tough situations.
Schedule Highlights- We start off the season with road swing through
Alabama to play 3 teams that were ranked last year and then have Vincennes
coming in town in early February as well. Our conference games are always
tough and the teams seem to be stronger this year.
Key to success in '12 - Our pitching staff has to "pitch" and not just
throw. We have improved tremendously on the offensive side of the ball
but the key is always pitching.

Starters returning : Position players: 4 Pitchers: 1
Outlook by position:
Infield - Defense has to be a stronger part of our game this season. We
are opptomistic that we have a more solid infield this spring than in
years past.
Catching- Behind the plate, we have two returning catchers who have
greatly improved from last season. We may also be able to have more depth
with the addition of Connor Wise behind Brandon Wilson and Brady Stafford.
Outfield- Our outfield has greater speed than in years past. We are
hopeful that we will be able to be more effective in slowing down runners
with these improvements.
Pitching- Some off season injuries have slimmed down our staff numbers;
however, we are confident that we will be able to put the right people in
the mix to have the best results.
Schedule Highlights-
Our schedule should have a good balance for us this season. Along with
our conference schedule, we have some high level programs such as Olney
Central from Illinois. This should push us early to find out where we are
and where we have to get to.

Outlook by position:
Infield - We have improved substantially on the infield. We feel like
this could be the best defensive infield we've had in quite sometime. We
cannot however sustain a lot of injuries at this position because depth is
certainly a concern.
Catching- We feel like we have the able bodies to be adequate behind the
plat but our catchers have not been tested and game experience is lacking.
With the pitching staff we feel that we have this poition will be a very
important piece to our success.
Outfield- We are very athletic and very experienced in the outfield with
2 guys returning from last year and Brent Morris stepping in to right
field after his injury. We are deep in the outfield and very athletic.
Pitching- This is by far the deepest staff we've had in a long long time.
We are very very young and it will take a lot of patience at times with
all the freshman we will be running out there. In saying that this is a
very talented group with a very very big upside but we will see if that
correlates into success this spring.

Starters returning : Position players: 5 Pitchers: 3
Outlook by position:
Infield - This has a chance to be our best defensive infield we've had in
a long time here at Walters. Kendell Keeton and Andrew Allen are two plus
defenders who bring experience up the middle. Freshmen Reid Mathews and
Collin Bennett will man the corners. Redshirt FR Ryan Webster had a great
fall and could battle for time as well. Freshman 1B Shane Riley could also
be a big bat if he can return from an injury sustained in the fall.
Catching- Austin Peay commit Michael Davis returns behind the plate for
us. He has improved tremendously behind the plate and should have a great
year for us. Three freshmen- Taylor Martin, Dustin Woody, and Devin Gray,
are all solid defenders and will battle for time behind the dish.
Outfield- Sophomores Marcus Davis and Josh Coker return after having solid
freshman seasons last year. In right, red-shirt freshman Matt Harrell led
our team in hitting this fall and should be a big bat for us. SO Jake
Ellison missed the fall with an injury, but could return to give us an
added boost out there as well. FR Nick Leffridge and SO Jordan Greenway
could each see time out there as well.
Pitching- We should be very deep at this spot. We have 6 sophomore
pitchers, all with a good bit of college experience. Three major college
transfers: Jon Reed(Tennessee), Zach Bernard(UNC), and Dale Innes(Clemson,
will all be huge factors for us and will all see time on weekends.
Cardinals draft pick Cody Poarch returns after an up and down freshman
year and we expect big things from him. Sophomores England Smith and Milan
Mantle will both see a ton of time after pitching significant innings for
us as freshmen. Freshman Rangers draft pick Josh Peterson will be a major
factor on weekends as well, either as a starter or relief. Freshman Chase
Cunningham had a great fall for us and has earned his stake at innings as
well. Freshmen Nick Leffridge, Jake Corum, Zach Walton, and Sam Burton
will all contribute on the bump also.
Schedule Highlights- Doubleheaders against perennial powers Chipola(FL),
San Jacinto(TX), and Spartanburg Methodist(SC) highlight our
non-conference games to go along with an always strong conference
schedule.
Key to success in '12 - We should be ok on the mound and defensively, but
we have to be able to swing the bats better than we did this fall.
Hopefully we can continue to improve throughout the season and be ready to
make a run at the post-season. |
