Coaches comments: Coaches comments:

Greg Dennis - " Cleveland State is an opponent we are pretty familiar with since we saw them quite a bit this previous fall. They are a very talented team with a strong sophomore core and a very solid & deep pitching staff. Our opinion of them is very high and we feel that they are the type of team that you had better bring your "A" game to beat. They won't beat themselves and are very well-coached. We have to go out and play the type of game that we have been playing so far this season.... move base runners, get key hits, make the
routine plays and pitch well. We must continue to trust our abilities and adapt to the game as it is played out. That attitude and approach has kept us in all of our games thus far and hopefully, will allow us to stay in the hunt with the Cougars.
"
Mike Policastro - " Chattanooga State has come out of the gate and established themselves as a much better team than they were last year.  Coach Dennis is doing some good things with those players. We must continue to pitch and play defense well. We continue to leave run-ners on base and we must get better at scoring with runners in scoring position. We should have gained a lot of confidence after last weekend and we must continue to build on that to become the successful team we are shooting to be."

In game 2 Chatt State jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to see Cleveland State come back with 10 runs in the last 3 innings. Relief pitching let down for the Tigers and the Cougar bats were too much. Kevin Hammons pitched well to secure the win. In game 3 the Cougars jumped out to an early 5-0 lead when Tiger pitcher Adam Cross walked 3 of the first 5 hitters and allowed key hits. The Tigers battled back but the Cleveland State bats stayed hot and Brandon Langston held the Tigers to 5 runs in 4 innings while Travis Simmons and David Miller each went 4 for 4 and Dustin Tommey continued a torrid hitting day.

Player of the Game (2) - Dustin Tommey

Player of the Game (3) - David Miller

Series Wrap-up - For Cleveland State they got what they needed, good pitching, excellent defense and very good hitting. They kept the pressure on the defense the entire weekend and the Tigers couldn't get it done on the bump. Cleveland State played extremely well. With 42 hits and 36 runs in the series, Cleveland had the best offensive output in the league so far this year.

Morristown—Saturday, Feb. 26 was a busy day for Walters State sports fans. They had six games to attend on Saturday. All the games were at home. Senator baseball got the day started with a doubleheader against Columbia St. They split the doubleheader with the Chargers in a pair of classic pitching duels. In the first game, Zac Bowman had an RBI single scoring Tyler Westmoreland in the sixth. Ryan Kinder had a double in the game and Westmoreland also doubled. Columbia State started a rally in the seventh with a lead off triple by Andrew Gannon, but he was left stranded when starting pitcher Doodle Hicks retired the next three batters for the win. Hicks (3-1) picked up the win for Walters State, and Ben Wilshire (0-2) got the loss for Columbia State. In game two the twin bill, Columbia State scored a run in the fifth and a run in the seventh to take the win 2-0. Walters State had a rally going in the sixth when they had the basses loaded with no outs. However, Ryan Steen relieved starting pitcher Luke Lamm, and Steen retired the next three Senators. Lamm (2-0) got the win, and Steen (1) had the save. Philip Utley took the loss for the Senators. The Senators are now 9-3 and the Chargers go to 5-6.

Morristown—The Senators rallied in the fifth and seventh to get the win, 11-2, over Columbia State on Friday afternoon. The win takes Walters State to 8-2 on the season. The Chargers are now 4-5.  Justin Pickett continued his hot streak by adding another HR to the year. He was 2-5. Zac Bowman had a homerun and a double. Tyler Westmoreland sent a ball off the fence in right-center for a triple. He had three RBI’s for the day. Kevin Hagy was 2-4 with a double and a stolen base.  “This was not characteristic of Columbia State,” said head coach Ken Campbell after the game. “They’re a team that makes very few errors and puts a lot of runs on the board. I have a feeling we will see a different team tomorrow.” Cole Draughn (3-0) got the win for the Senators. He went seven innings. Adam Trent took the mound in the eighth and went the rest of the way. It was not a save situation.  Randall Hodge (1-1) got the loss for Columbia State. He had four strong innings for the Chargers before things fell apart in the fifth. He could only go six innings before Jason Lenard took the mound in seventh. Buddy Kinsler finished the game for the Chargers, pitching in the eighth. These two teams will finish their three game series tomorrow, Feb. 26 at noon with a doubleheader at Senator Field in Morristown.

Nails pitched the 7th for his 3rd save of the season.  Southwest won 5-4.

In game 3, Hiwassee overcame a 4-1 deficit with a 4 run sixth inning as
John Mathison delivered the big blow with a 2 run single.  PJ Ison
picked up the win in relief and Chase Ellison pitched out of trouble as
Hiwassee won 5-4.  Southwest could not capitalize in both the sixth and
seventh innings as they squandered scoring opportunities.  In the sixth,
they had runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and in the seventh the bases
were loaded with one out, but they could not push a run across.
Ellison struck out the final two Southwest batters to preserve the Hiwassee
victory.

Series Highlights - All three games were closely contested, with
Southwest winning two of three.  Margins of victory were 2,1 and 1.  Both
teams played hard and in each game, the winners were fortunate to win.

Key Play or Inning - Elaborate -
Southwest used a four run 7th inning and held on during a 9th inning Hiwassee rally to come away with a 4-2 victory. The big blow in the 7th was a 2 RBI double by Wes Melton to give the Saluqi a 4-0 lead. Southwest got 8 strong innings from starter Shane Jackson, who improved his
season record to 3-1. Hiwassee got a solid outing from Rob Sherwood, who went the distance.  Southwest survived in the ninth as Hiwassee plated 2 runs and had the bases loaded with no one out. A 1-2-3 double play and a ground out to Melton at short sealed the victory for Southwest.
The two teams resume the series at Gagliano Field in Memphis at 1:00 on Saturday.
