Steve Cornelison - "Volunteer
seems to be playing extremely well at this time. The have a world of talent
and it is always tough to play at their place. I know Jeff will have his
team ready to play. To be successful we have to do a better job on the mound
than we did last weekend. In addition to that, we will need to tighten up defensively. I think when you go on the road to play a team of Vol State's qual-ity, you have to step up and improve your game in every phase. We are a little banged up at this time, with three everyday guys either sick or out, so we'll need some guys that haven't played a lot to step up to the plate and get the job done." |
Jeff Smith - "Jackson
State is a very well coached team that is playing very good at this point in
the season. I know Steve will have his team ready to play. They are very athletic and I hope we can give them a good series. We must continue to improve in all areas. The area of biggest concern is the mistakes we continue to make in fielding the baseball. If we make the same mistakes that we have be making than we will get beat. If we come out and play the defense we are capable of playing than we might have a chance of playing with Jackson." |

They built on that start and scored 5 runs in the first. Jarrett Sellers threw very well for them and held the Tigers at bay allowing only 3 runs and Ryan Eberstein came in and got the save with 3+ innings work. Series Highlights - For the most part a well played series with games being decided by clutch hits and quality defensive plays. Both teams made some sterling plays in the field and at times pitched very well. Game 1 SATURDAY |

Blackwell did a good job of keeping their hitter off balance and getting outs early in the count. He finished with a pitch count of 95. In the second game of the series both starting pitchers, (Hodge Columbia) and (Hammons Cleveland) went deep in the game both going 7 innings and giving up three runs. The key play to game two was in the top of the eighth inning when a throwing error on a runner trying to steal second by Columbia was thrown into centerfield, which was misplayed leading to the game winning run. In game three of the series the Cougar offense unloaded for 12 runs on 10 hits and was stopped after the fifth because of the mercy rule. Brandon Langston picked up the win going a 5 inning complete game on two hits and no runs. Series Highlights - Cleveland State continued to get better offensively and because of timely hitting the Cougars were able to win the series two game to one. Our pitchers really stepped up and did a good job of throwing strikes and getting outs early in the counts. Columbia State is a good ball team that is really going to beat some teams in our league this year. Overall it was a good series and we are happy to be where we are right now. Game 1 FRIDAY |

Wright 1-3 0 3 1 0 0 0 0 Highlights: Key Play or Inning - In game one, Southwest came from behind to win as Clay Wright (3-4 with a 2B and 3 RBI) delivered the game winning hit with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Offen-sively, it was a slug fest for both teams as the wind blew out of spacious Gagliano Field, causing several balls to travel deeper than normal. Hitting home runs for Southwest in game one were Brendan Murphy (2) and Brit Vincent (2). For Motlow, Rosario, Bobby Bratton, and Luis Bautista all homered in the first contest. In game 2, the Bucks out muscled Southwest in route to an 18-9 victory to salvage game three of the series. Rosario and Bobby Bratton each homered and Glen Rogers, Kyle Dempsey and Courtney English had RBI triples. Gray, Bratton, Roberts, Bautista, and Barr each had doubles. For Southwest, Brit Vincent went 2-4 with 3 RBI and Clay Wright went 1-3 with 3 RBI. Series Highlights - Southwest was fortunate to win two of three games against a very talented Motlow squad. The Saluqis improved to 6-6 in conference action while Motlow held steady with a 4-5 mark. The biggest factor of the weekend was the fact that the wind blew out the entire weekend which caused scores to be inflated. Game 1 FRIDAY SW Pitching: |
