The 2012 Golden Bears will try to build on the momentum from last season's post-season run to the State Tournament. Coming off our program's 4th straight AAA state tournament appearance, the 2012 team returns several key players from last season. The strength of our team should be our pitching staff. We have several good arms and should be deep with experience. Leading the way is Vandy signee Kyle Smith (SR/RHP/9-1/0.6 ERA/111 K/70 IP), Austyn Dyer (SR/RHP/8-2/1.4 ERA/58 K/61 IP), Parker Flatt (SR/LHP/5-3/3.0 ERA/53 K/46 IP), and SR/LHP Josh Smith. Josh was injured all of last season but has a 9-1 record from 2009/2010. Other pitchers who should contribute are Mason Barber (SR/RHP), Conner Sugg (SR/RHP), Campbell Scholl (JR/RHP), Josh Weaver (JR/RHP), and Brandon Smith (JR/RHP). Offensively, we will be led by Kyle Smith (SR/P/3B/1B/.290/10 HR/35 RBI), Zach Tompkins (SR/C/.300/3 HR/20 RBI), Robby Amity (JR/3B/1B/OF/.330/10 RBI), and Brandon Henson (SR/OF/.310/15 RBI. Other key hitters will be Josh Smith (SR/P/1B), Austyn Dyer (SR/P/1B/3B), Forrest Goodwin (SR/2B/ OF), Cody Carr (JR/OF), Kyle Grace (JR/OF), Hunter Gilbert (JR/SS), Brett Smith (SR/2B), Mason Barber (SR/3B), Chris Johnston (JR/C/ 2B), Kote Smith (JR/3B), and Derek Bailey (SR/OF). We improved a great deal last year offensively, and hopefully we will continue that improvement in 2012. Defensively, we should be solid, especially behind the plate with Zach Tompkins. He is our leader and a really good defensive player. We have a couple holes we have to fill to be really good on defense, and we need some guys to step up. Hopefully, by tournament time we will have the right pieces in place to be successful. We have a large senior class and competition at most positions, so everyone staying on the same track is going to be a key. We are looking forward to an exciting 2012 season.
