Elizabethton           28-11               2/26/08          78

2008 will bring some fierce competition for starting spots in Elizabethton.  The Cyclones will need to replace 12 players from last years 28-11 record setting squad. One player that will be be dearly missed by the Cyclones and those who knew him is former Cyclone Cody Marley whose life was cut short on October 7th, 2007, due to a
tragic automobile accident.

The only starting position player returning is senior catcher Wes Anderson.  Senior OF Nick Papantoniou saw some successful varsity action last year and will compete with fellow senior C.J. Campbell, juniors Casey Crapps and Jerry Berkley, and sophomore Zack Boles in the OF.  Daniel Simerly (SR), Nolan Childers (JR), Chris Dunbar (JR), Zack Montgomery (JR), Jordan Hodges JR), Brent Powell (JR), Jake Davis (SO), Knox Eryasa (SO), and Matt Febuary (SO) will all be battling it out for starting IF jobs.  Anderson will anchor the catching core along with juniors Jordan Hodges and Ethan Laws.

The pitching staff will be led by returning lettermen juniors Chris Dunbar (6-3 3.97) and Casey Crapps (2-0 3.89).  Senior Dan Simerly will also serve in a starting role on the mound.  C.J. Campbell (SR), Jerry Berkley (JR), Nolan Childers (JR), and Jake Davis (SO) will also share the load on the mound.

"These guys work extremely hard.  They know how to play the game the way it was meant to be played.  Their work ethic and attitude will pay dividends many times over as the season progresses," said Coach Nix.

Outlook by position:

Infield -Although the infield will be young I am very excited about our players.  I think are defense will be above average and offensively we will be pretty good.
Catching- Catching could be a problem. We don't have a true catcher and our back up catcher is not returning.
Outfield- Our outfield will be about average.
Pitching- Pitching will also be a big question mark but we are working hard to bring a good product to the mound.
Key to success in '08- We need to play as a team.  Make the routine defensive plays. Manufacture runs late in the game and pitching has to through strikes and eliminate walks.
