Lookout Valley  6a  31-5       2/1

The Yellow Jackets return six starters from the 2009 District and Region championship team. Senior all-disrict catcher Aaron O'Dell (.433, 7 2b's, 38 RBI)returns with four other infielders; Junior first baseman Cory McKaig (.342, 7 2b's, 45 RBI), Junior shortsop Tyler Penland (.371, 48 R, 28 SB), Senior third baseman Caleb Cass (.404, 7 HR, 43 RBI), and Senior second baseman Mathew Townson. The outfield returns Senior all-district selection Daniel Patrick (.393, 7 2b's, 32 RBI). Last year contributors Junior utility player Mathew Allison and Junior outfilder Hayden Turner will be competing with others for starting positions in 2010. Senior outfielder Ben Adkins, Senior IF Chad Moore, Senior utility player Justin Sawyer, Junior third baseman Carson Bethune, and Junior outfielder Zack Frashier will all compete for starting and part time play.
Pitching will be a huge question mark for the upcoming season. Turner brings back the most experience with 63.1 innings pitched last year and a career record of 10-5. Many other quality players will be on the mound this year including Cass, Patrick, Penland, McKaig, Allison, Bethune, Frashier, and sophomore Austin Robinson. Our success this season will depend on the emergence of these pitchers, we are anxious to see which ones separate themselves from the others and become front line pitchers. There are 24 players on this years roster, this should give us great competition for playing time and offer greater flexibility in the line-up.

Monterey       7a     21-8        3/15

Coming off its first ever trip to the state tournament, Monterey High Wildcat baseball team will be trying to get back there in 2010. After losing 6 seniors in the class of 09 there will be some holes to fill. Leading the 2010 wildcats will be Senior ss/rhp Josh Wilson, senior 2b/rhp Trent Mccormick, and Senior cf/lhp Ross ward. All of these guys have been at least 3 year starters and contributed to the 09 success. Being strong up the middle will be the wildcats strength with Wilson, McCormick, Ward, senior Mario Salinas, and Jr. c Corey Ledbetter.
Leading the pitching will be Josh Wilson who will be the hard throwing #1 with McCormick and Ward rounding out the rotation. Also sophomores Rudy Amendallero and Chase Cloyd will provide some quality innings.

Gordonsville    8a      8-14        1/7

With ten players returning with valuable game experience we should be improved from last year. Senior (RHP/INF) Jacob Bennett returns. Jacob is a four year starter and the ace of our staff. We need Jacob to improve at the plate this year and we need for Jacob to be special on the mound this year. Senior (1B) Cole Bush rounds out this years senior class. Cole made steady improvement all of last year at the plate, we need Cole to be more consistent in the field. Junior (C) Brad Fitts returns behind the plate. Brad is the best contact hitter on the team as he had the lowest strikeout ratio on the team. Brad improved all year and reall came to life in the tournament last year.
Junior (OF) Ben Gentry led the team in hits, RBI, and doubles last year. Ben was apleasant surprise and we hope he continue to improve this year. Sophomore (LHP/1B) Tyler Coleman. Tyler is a worker and he has alot of tools to be a special player. Tyler batted .321 last year as a freshman. We need Tyler to be more consistent on the mound this year and be in the top of our rotation. Junior (RHP/OF) Zach Sanders. Zach has the ability to be a dominant pitcher but he averaged close to two walks an inning last year, but he average over 1.7 strikeouts per inning. We need him to be dependable in our rotation this year. With so many players returning with game experience we are expecting big things this year. Our main concerns are developing a #2 and #3 pitcher for our district schedule, and producing more at the plate last year with our young team we batted .259 as a team. If we can do those things and have a solid defense then we will have a chance to be competitive in 2010.

Trousdale County   8a    16-12      1/12

For the past five seasons the Yellow Jackets have reached at least the region semi-finals with two state tournament trips, but with the graduation of six full time starters, the 2010 campaign may be a daunting task to continue that trend.  TCHS will be young and green in important positions.  All three outfield positions will have new faces and finding a catcher, first baseman, and a third baseman are top priorities from the start. The three everyday players returning are Anthony Spears (Sr. RHP/C) who moves in from the outfield to the primary catcher, but the question is, "Who will catch Anthony when he pitches?" Whom ever receives the task will be inexperienced at the least.  Spears will go in as the ace of the staff, but questions remain in the focus and commitment depart-ment. Dillon Young (Sr. INF) returns after an all district/region 2009 where he belted 7 homers and drove in 24 runs Dillon has primarily played 2B but may move to CF where he has recorded innings throughout his career.  Young will be asked to protect another all district/region (Freshman All State) performer, Adam Ford (So. SS/RHP) in the lineup. Ford led the Jackets with a .375 average and 14 doubles in his rookie campaign and started all 28 games at shortstop. After these three, the next most experienced player is Allen Bradshaw (Jr. RHP/INF). Bradshaw started over half the games last season, those coming at 3B, 2B, or on the mound.  Bradshaw has some ability but it has yet to be determined if he can step up on a day-to-day basis.  Jordan Halliburton (Sr. RHP) saw quite a bit of time out of the bullpen last season while making a few spot starts.  He will be asked to step up his performance on the mound, especially if the Yellow Jackets have any chance of success. Ryan Denius (Jr. LHP/OF) looks to step into the lineup full time.  The hardest worker on the team may have to learn to play first base but will definitely see time on the mound. Hunter Murphree (So. RHP/INF/C) will jump in the mix, but where has not been decided. He is athletic and may jump into a role he has never played before....catcher. Devon Turczyn (So. OF/RHP) may earn a position with his raw athletic ability. The fastest player on the team, he looks to win an outfield spot. The coaching staff sees a bit of Craig Moreland (Former all state, Vol State, Cumberland Univ. & MLB Draft Pick) at this age. "Craig was a little ahead of him when it comes to baseball sense and production, but just athleticism, they are similar." says 9th year coach Davy Cothron. "In small rural schools, the drive to do well seems to cycle, at least in my exper-iences.  This year's club seems to not have that drive at this point.  It's issue after issue... so far, but we will push on and hopefully we will develop into a compet-itive team by the tournament."

Friendship Christian  8a   26-11    2/1

The Commanders are coming off their third straight appearance in the state baseball tournament. In 2010, the Commanders are returning seven position players and five pitchers from a team that finished 26-11 and lost in the semi-finals of the state tourn-ament for the second straight year. The position players returning include all state SS Lee Maasen. Maasen hit .491 with 11 homers and 53 RBI's. Also returning are 3B/P Dylan Boyd (.464), OF Chris Hall (.361), OF John Markham, 3B/P Mitch Miller, 1B/P Matt Goodner, 2B Evan Shelton, and C Drew Erie.

The pitching staff will have a mixture of old and new faces. The staff includes the old faces of: Matt Goodner, Mitch Miller, Dylan Boyd, Lee Maasen, and Trevor Bowles. New faces include freshmen Brennan Swindoll and Sophmore Kyle Wood. Swindoll pitched a gem in the state tournament last year as an 8th grader. in 7.2 innings of work the lefty had 11 K's.

The 2010 Commander baseball in a good mixture of experienced players and good young talent. The expectations are high and hopefully everyone is ready to meet them.
