"To be successful this year we must continue to improve in all areas and
develop a deeper pitching rotation. Our attitude and approach will dictate
our play, we can't allow ourselves to be complacent because we have had
some success the last couple of years," added Coach Dinger.

With the loss of three four year starters there will be
some big holes to fill in the line-up and the loss of three of the top
four batters will be huge, but we have a good group of returnees who will
be counted on to fill the holes and 10 players who gained valuable
experience in 2007:
Bryan Gibbs SR. P/3B AVE. 427
Matthew Thornton SR. CF AVE. 333
Josh Arnold SR. C/1B AVE. 324
Jake Oneal SR. SS AVE. 261
Cody Mason SR. UT/P AVE. 301
Chase Malone JR. LF/P AVE. 212
Jacob Bennett SO. IF/P AVE. 239
Andrew Gibbs JR. IF/P AVE. 412
The pitching should be a strength of this years team but we still have to
show more consistency when we take the mound: Cody Mason SR: pitched 37
innings with a 3-2 record and a 2.65 ERA greatest strength
is control only 5 walks in 37 innings. Bryan Gibbs SR: pitched 38 2/3
innings with a 5-3 record and 2.90 ERA struck out 44 batters. Has a big
arm and a good curve but he has to work on his control walked 34
batters. Chase Malone JR: pitched 30 2/3 innings with a 3-1 record and had
5.71 ERA. Needs to find more consistency and he could be a gem.
Andrew Gibbs JR: pitched 8 2/3 innings with a 2-0 record and a 3.23 ERA.
Struck out 13 and is a good worker and needs to be able to locate his
fastball to go along with his breaking stuff. Jacob Bennett SO: pitched 13
1/3 innings with a 2-0 record and a 0 ERA and 16 K's. Has a lot of ability
did not have to pitch in any big games but needs to step up and give us 4
quality starters for district play. Austin Lankford FR: has a big time arm
needs to work on his mental approach and he
could find some valuable innings out of the bull pen and spot starts.
"To be successful this year we have to develop the work ethic to get us
over the hump in the district tournament we have been close the last few
years and with the depth at pitching we have to be able to protect leads
and learn how to manufacture runs," said Coach Petty.

The 2007 edition of Yellow Jacket baseball wound up with
a surprise run to the regional's for the third consecutive year, and doing
so with mainly sophomores. Those players are now juniors and count up most
of the experience on the 2008 roster. There are only two true senior
starters in LHP/1B/OF John Scruggs and RHP/3B/1b Phillip White.
After going 7-1 as a sophomore on state tournament team, Scruggs battled
through arm problems in 2007 to only record one win. He was
unavailable in the season-ending regional loss to Monterey, but following
successful nerve moving surgery and rehab, he is again expected to staple
himself as the leader of the pitching staff. White will be the
number 2 or 3 starter and play third and first base, but if he doesn't hit
he could find himself as a defensive specialist.
The other members of the senior class will be pushed for playing time by a
slew of underclassmen. "We desperately need a shortstop and the catcher's
position is still a concern. Hopefully Scruggs will be healthy and
someone can protect him in the lineup. If not, then a long season
awaits us." Coach Cothron.
